Deep Encounter (1973)

Synopsis
Also co-starring in the companion movie on a SWV double bill titled “Armed Servicers” (from the same production company Love Ltd.), British-accented Charles Orlando makes an okay attempt at doing the private eye routine as Mike Harper in Deep Encounter, a no-budget XXX vehicle which ends with a threat: “Watch for Harper!” No sequel apparently was ever released, so the creator of the more famous Lew Harper character, Ross Macdonald, can rest easy.Obviously Orlando is no Paul Newman, but his semi-improvised voice-over patter is fitfully amusing, especially when he embarrassingly tries to sound hip. Like the poverty row films back in the 1930s, there is no escape “upwards” from this porn gutter, so both he and the anonymous director are just going through the motions.Sinking the film is Orlando’s costar Adam Ward (definitely NOT the Robin we dug in the ’60s), who is pretty repulsive and gets far too much screen time doing his hardcore thing. The actresses, none of whom have been identified to date per IMDb, are a diverting lot, including one suspect who has huge natural jugs rivalling the strippers of a previous era like Ann Howe and Virginia Bell -she really looks out of place doing generic porn.Besides lifting “The Twilight Zone” theme music we are regaled with the themes from “One Step Beyond” and “Hawaii Five-O” too, and by the porn magic of “we don’t need to pay no stinking royalties!” there’s plenty of “Pink Panther” and “Casino Royale” (Burt Bacharach version of course) music cues also.
