Donald Trump’s suspension of the longstanding “de minimis” exemption on imports has already had a HUGE effect! The exemption meant commercial parcels worth eight hundred dollars or less weren’t subject to tariffs. And now, according to the Universal Postal Union, the change has resulted in an over EIGHTY percent drop in postal traffic to the U.S.! It’s largely because many carriers – including airlines – are unwilling or unable to collect the new duties, and many postal services have suspended some or all of their service to the U.S.
In other news, artificial intelligence company Anthropic will pay a one-point-five BILLION dollar settlement to authors! A class-action lawsuit alleged that the company illegally downloaded MILLIONS of books from pirate sites, and used them to train its chatbot named “Claude”. The case was slated to go to court in December, but Anthropic agreed to pay about three thousand dollars to the writers of roughly a half-million books that were covered by the settlement. A lawyer for the authors said that as far as they can tell, this is the largest copyright recovery ever”!
And Tesla’s board wants to give Elon Musk a pay package that COULD be worth up to a TRILLION dollars! But there IS a catch, and a pretty big one! To get the payout, within ten years, Tesla would have to OCTUPLE its current market cap, deliver twenty million vehicles, produce a million robotaxis, and make a million of its “Optimus” humanoid robots. The board described the package as “a long-term… performance award… to retain and incentivize (Musk) to focus his energies on Tesla”.
